The opening titles are quite small and white and on a black background. With the wind as the sound effects, this gives it a chilly atmosphere. Then at 1:38 we see the first shot of the film, which shows some snow falling at night time. This gives a clue as to when the film is set, which is winter time. Then there is a voice and because of the narrow depth of field which gives it a voyeuristic feel, we know that we are watching the snow fall from someone's point of view. Then we see the boy, but not much of his character is established from this shot. He looks like he is always alone and lonely. We get the idea that maybe the film will be shown from this boy's point of view. We see him through his reflection on the window. The next shot is an over the shoulder shot of two characters an old man and the face of the other character in the car is not revealed, but they look like a child and they are humming. The lighting is dark with a little bit of key light so we can just about see the old man. So far its in keeping with the generic conventions of a horror because its dark and is set at night time. When they cut back to the shot of the boy looking out the window, the music changes from being a natural sounds like they were in a car to like an orchestra playing some unsettling and chilling music. This indicates that possibly there is something wrong with the characters. The editing is quite slow with long shots lasting for at least 10 seconds. This shows a lot of detail and establishes the setting and the characters.
