Textual Analysis: The Strangers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLDdPW5yfR4

This starts off with a narrator explaining that the film is inspired by true events. The writing is quite small and orange and like in Let the right one in the background is black. The narrator and the titles being shown on the screen gives the audience a bit of a clue of what is going to happen in the film. In the background are some sustained notes from the synths which sound haunting an chilling. Then there is a sound of a car starting. Then there are some tracking shots which look like are from a hand held camera, this makes it look like the audience is watching from inside the car. There are different houses shown in the shot and each time it fades to black before showing the next shot, this makes if feel like we are watching from someone's point of view and they are blinking. I think this is a great way to establish the setting a scene because it is also creating a bit of suspense and mystery at the same time. The houses being shown look like they are from a middle class street in America which would fit with the generic conventions of this genre. Then at the end of these shots it fades to black again and we hear a '911' emergenc y call and already something is wrong, which is an unsual start to horror films as the tension usually builds up. This could be a snipet of what happens to one of the characters halfway through.
